Tebow Time

I've been working on a blog about cynicism and the holidays for a while, but it hasn't come together yet. In the meantime, I have some thoughts on Tim Tebow that I would like to share.
Since high school, I have despised Tebow. He went to Nease and they tore my Palatka Panthers up. It was never close. Nease would be up by 40 at halftime and Tebow would be out of the game.
I couldn't stand him. He was a legend in high school.
Then, Tebow decided to go to the University of Florida. As a Seminole fan, I came to despise Tebow even more than I already had. I rooted vigorously against him.
In high school, I knew nothing about Tebow's faith.
In college, it started to become hard to ignore. Every game he would play, he'd have scriptures on his face. Every interview, he would praise God. Every game, the TV broadcasters would talk about how he goes on mission trips during the summer. I was a skeptic of how real Tebow's faith was. I felt like he was overdoing it.
I think part of my skepticism may have been jealousy. I never had aspirations to be a professional quarterback, but seeing someone who grew up so close to me be that successful, probably brought out some feelings of resentment.
I didn't want to see Tebow succeed.
I must say my stance has changed. This year, I find myself rooting for the Broncos. They started the season 1-4 and decided to start Tebow. Few people expected him to succeed. He is currently 6-1 and has the Broncos at the top of the AFC West.
He hasn't played particularly well. The team simply believes in Tebow and he points to God, every chance that he gets. I was reading a Grantland article, talking about the mystery of Tebow. It is a great article that brings perspective to the extreme opinions on Tebow. Something written in the article was that the majority of Christians wouldn't believe that God has anything to do with Tebow's success. While that may be true, I find my self on the opposite side of the statement. I think God has everything to do with Tebow's success and I think Tebow would say the same thing.
In a recent message at CCW, Derrick talked about having hope. Tebow is a clear example of someone who is putting his hope in God and leading people to the conversation of faith in the process.
I don't know if he will ultimately pan out as some great quarterback, but I can now say that I'm rooting that he will be.
